On Labor Day Weekend, 2020, fires broke out across the Klamath National Forest. Spurred by high velocity winds, they quickly consumed hundreds of thousands of acres in some of the most rugged terrain in the Pacific N.W.
The burned area straddles the border between California and Oregon, including much of the Klamath National Forest and surrounding areas. There are many small rural communities spread throughout the mountains and river canyons of this land, with the largest of them being the town of Happy Camp, CA, with a population of around 1,150 people. Most of whom live outside the main area of town, out winding, heavily forested mountain roads. Over 250 homes were destroyed completely in only a couple hours when the Slater Fire first broke out. Most people escaped with barely the clothes on their back. That day there were extraordinarily high winds, and they were bearing straight down into the Happy Camp Valley. Firefighters and community members worked like mad to create fire breaks around the main part of town, and managed to keep it from getting into the downtown area before the winds shifted. Sending the fire back up the mountains over Grayback Ridge, taking out even more remote properties.
Our mission here is to provide any kind of support we can to this neighboring community that has been hit so hard. We take supplies and donations to the Tribal Headquarters, where they then distribute them as needed. But our BIG idea came to us as we were contemplating how else we can help people.
So we have made a promise that 100% of all our proceeds from the sale of our single “Change” will be donated directly to the Karuk Tribe. We have started an online video campaign in order to reach as many people as we can to donate. It originally was only supposed to last 30 days, but we have extended it indefinitely. You can go to iTunes, or any other online music retailer to download this single. We have posted the first video below, along with a link that you can copy and paste to your social media in order to help us get the word out.
PLEASE buy the song, it's only a dollar, and if enough people pitch in we can get the Karuk people a Platinum Record to hang in their museum, as a testament to the love and generosity of the human spirit. I know we all feel very isolated during these changing times, but this is your chance to reach out and give kindness to others. We are all in this Together!
Please check back here for new information, updates on our progress, and new media to keep this campaign alive!
And last, but Not least, we want to extend our eternal thanks and support to all of the Firefighters risking their lives in the middle of a pandemic to help save our communities and wildlands from these devastating fires ripping up and down the West Coast. You are truly our heroes!
Thank You and Blessings,
JCB
